Vietnam issues certificates for two GM corn strains

(Tinmoitruong.vn) - Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment has just issued biological safety certificates to two varieties of genetically modified corn.

GA21, produced by Syngenta Vietnam, and NK603 of Dekalb Vietnam (a local subsidiary of Monsanto) were approved after a careful assessment by government experts charged with protecting the country’s environment, agricultural sector and public health.


The Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment also asked the approved companies to annually manage, monitor and report on the time, location and amount of any GM corn plantings. Prior to the issuance of biosafety certificates in Vietnam, NK603 has been approved in 11 countries and GA21 has been approved in 9 countries including developed countries like USA, Canada.


Last August, the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment has issued biological safety certificates to genetically modified MON 89034. Earlier, the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development has certified food safety and food breeding for genetically modified NK603, MON 89034, MIR162 and GA21 corns.
