Earth Hour 2014: United to save the Planet

(14:49:29 PM 28/03/2014)
(Tinmoitruong.vn) - “United to save the planet” is the main message of Earth Hour 2014 – a campaign that was initiated by WWF. This is the 8th year that Earth Hour is being organized globally and the 6th year since being introduced to Vietnam. Earth Hour 2014 is on Saturday 29th of March, from 20.30 – 21.30.

Launched in 2007 in Sydney, Australia, the campaign was designed to raise public awareness about climate change through a symbolic lights-out event. Two years later, the campaign became global and in 2013, there were 154 countries and territories participating in Earth Hour. Since then, Earth Hour has become more than an awareness-raising campaign: it is now a larger environmental movement, calling upon individuals, businesses, and governments to take action beyond the hour to save the planet.

“Earth Hour has always been more than just about lights off, it’s about people from all walks of life coming together throughout the year to show what they can do to protect the planet,” says Andy Ridley, CEO and Co-Founder of Earth Hour, from the movement’s current headquarters in Singapore.

Earth Hour was organized by WWF for the first time in Vietnam in 2009 with six cities and provinces participating. Over the course of three years of organizing the campaign, WWF-Vietnam watched as support for Earth Hour grew, with hundreds of government agencies, organizations, groups, businesses and thousands of individuals participating. Therefore, we handed over the management of the campaign to the community. 2014 will be the 3rd year that the Ministry of Industry and Trade (MOIT), on behalf of the government, is running the Earth Hour campaign in Vietnam. WWF is proud to continue providing technical support for the campaign.

In 2013, under the leadership of MOIT, all the cities and provinces in Vietnam participated in Earth Hour. Now in 2014, “Act for a greener planet” is MOIT’s campaign message.

To celebrate Earth Hour, WWF-Vietnam and our partners have organized a series of events, including:

WWF, through the Low Carbon Development Project, and Live&Learn are runing a quiz on energy for young people on Facebook from 16 – 29 of March. Another contest on how to save and use energy efficiently is to be on Facebook from 29th March to 15th May.

WWF is collaborating with Youth Union and Center for Consultancy and Energy Saving of Thua Thien-Hue province to organize a contest on saving and using energy efficiently for 1,000 students from 10 high schools in the province. The contest will be held from 8.00 – 11.30 am on 29th of March.

WWF together with Nokia and BOO, a garment company for young people in Vietnam, are encouraging people to recycle by donating their old mobile phones (at Nokia kiosks located in BOO shops in Hanoi). With each old phone received, Nokia will plant one mangrove tree as part of a joint WWF and Nokia project in Huong Tra town, Thua Thien-Hue province. Also, for each T-shirt sold during the Earth Hour campaign, BOO will donate $1 to the project.

For the first time this year, Earth Hour has a superhuman ambassador, Spider Man, who is calling for people to “Use your power to save the planet”. In Vietnam, runner-up Miss Vietnam Thuy Van, singer Bao Tram, and Danish Ambassador Mr. John Nielsen are proud to be Vietnam’s Earth Hour Ambassadors.

As millions of people watch the lights go out around the world this year, famous landmarks confirmed to participate in the event include the Empire State Building, London’s Tower Bridge, St Paul’s Cathedral, Edinburgh Castle, Brandenburg Gate, the Eiffel Tower, The Kremlin and Red Square in Moscow, the Bosphorus Bridge connecting Europe to Asia, the world’s tallest building, Burj Khalifa, Marina Bay Sands in Singapore, and many more.
