Vietnam reduces consumption of rhino horns

(Tinmoitruong.vn) - The representative body for the Government of Vietnam to implement the rights and obligations of the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES Vietnam) said that after a year to implement the propaganda campaign to raise awareness for the people of Vietnam, the number of people wishing to buy and use rhino horns in Vietnam had decreased by 38% compared to the previous campaign.

As compared with the period of August 2013, the number of people believing in the medicinal value of this "magic bullet" has fallen by 25.4% (before the propaganda campaign, it was 51%). In particular, Hanoi is the place with the biggest change to the number of people wishing to buy and use rhino horns, which is decreased by 77%; the number of people believing in the medicinal value of rhino horns reduces by 53%.

Mr. John E. Scanlon, Secretary General of CITES appreciated the effective and practical efforts of Vietnam in order to reduce the demand for rhino horns. He also confirmed that the survey results showed the positive impact of propaganda programs on the perception of rhino horns in Vietnam.
