A series of challenges

With current rapid urbanization rate, Vietnam in general, the South key economic region in particular, must face many challenges in urban development such as traffic congestion, resource depletion, environmental degradation... The uncontrolled urban expansion makes agricultural land loss and the impact of climate change makes the inadequacies of urban worse and worse. Heaped difficulties of Ho Chi Minh City to solve the problem of urban inundation are a typical example.

Specifically, the process of rapid urbanization and population growth of the South urban in recent years have caused adverse environmental impacts to soil, water, air. On daily average, the urban discharges thousands of tons of household garbage, industrial waste, hazardous waste. Meanwhile, treatment technology is mainly to bury manually, without any auxiliary solution, giving environmental problems and consuming land fund used for landfills. Infrastructure to serve the treatment of hazardous waste is still lack and does not fully meet the needs of enterprises.

Speaking of urbanization, the use of energy resources must be mentioned. Issues of energy and energy security are always a top concern of the countries in the world. The more the demand for human life is, the more the use of energy resources is.

Regional association and sustainable development

To address the challenges of urbanization, the experts said that the urban must be developed towards green growth. Specifically, despite it is late, the localities must make development planning for industry, infrastructure, and transportation reasonably with the priority to retain the green spaces, protect natural resources and water sources. It is time that the producer must take into account of minimizing fuel use to avoid environmental contamination.

Prof. Dr. Kim Do Nyun, Senior Advisor to the South Korean president shared experiences in the development of the Seoul metropolitan area. According to him, the process of urban development increases not only the population and economic but also environmental issues, waste treatment, protection of natural resources. The goal of current urban development is coping with climate change effectively, developing associated with environmental protection. When economic transforms, it must focus on developing high technology, especially innovative technology.

Another issue that local authorities in the South key economic areas must take into account is how to associate to maximize the advantages of each province and city, to serve the overall development. It is the only way to enhance the region's competitiveness. From the infrastructure of airport and port to trade services, tourism or sources of agricultural and aquatic raw materials... must be recognized, giving direction to develop in a systematic way, avoiding small and wasted fragmentation. With the region-wide projects, there must be the involvement of communities, enterprises, localities and central government.

The South key economic region needs a policy mechanism for further development and a focal point for coordinating the entire region. In this way, the localities in the region may overcome the current shortcomings, closely connect with each other and promote the potential, towards sustainable development.
