New babies give small population of Cat Ba Langur hope

(10:29:21 AM 30/10/2014)
(Tinmoitruong.vn) - Six babies have already been born into the small population of wild Cat Ba langurs this year, the newest discovered early this month – reports the Cat Ba Langur Conservation Project.

The Cat Ba langur is found only on Cat Ba Island – Hai Phong city. By the end of 2000, there were only around 50 animals left in the wild, a 98% population drop from approximately 2500 animals in the 1960s. The population crash is primarily a result of uncontrolled hunting for sport and for the traditional medicine called “monkey balm”.

Today there are only two reproducing subpopulations on the island. The other groups are either all female or all male, and thus are unable to have babies. This has kept the population increase extremely slow.

Today the Cat Ba langur is the subject of local pride and they are no longer hunted. Protection allows these majestic golden-headed monkeys to slowly but surely increase their numbers and, hopefully, in the near future, they will no longer hold the dubious distinction of being one of “The 25 Most Endangered Primates” in the world.
