Boats are mining sand illegally day and night in the River Cua Luc, near the world heritage site of Ha Long Bay in Quang Ninh.

 

The site is about 200m from Hon Gac Island, borderingthe three wards of Ha Long City, which are Cao Xanh, Gieng Day and BaiChay. The site has not been inspected by any local authority or environmental police so far.

 

Local people told a representative of the Vietnam News Agency (VNA)based in Quang Ninh Province that more than 30 boats mined sand illegally day and night during the past month.

 

Pham Van Hung, the owner of one of these boats, said he was hired to mine sand and transport it to a nearby beach in Reu Island in Bai Chay Ward, Ha LongCity. Hung earned about VND3 million (US$140) per boat trip.

 

Mining of sand has impacted the ecological environment and the life of

 

local residents.

 

Cao Xanh Ward People's Committee Vice-Chairman Pham Van Son toldthe VNA representative that the mining of sand was taking place in the Hon GacIsland area belonging to Cao Xanh, Gieng Day and Bai Chay wards.

 

Son said sand was being mined under the framework of a dredging project ofthe Thang Long Cement Company. he also said Cao Xanh Ward would report the situation to the Ha Long City

 

People's Committee and work with appropriate authorities to inspect and deal with the violators.

 

However, Director of Quang Ninh Transport Department Vu Van Khanhtold the VNA representative that there was no dredging projectbeing implemented in the Hon Gac Island area.
