The World Bank along with Vietnam cope with climate change: Provide an overall support package

(Tinmoitruong.vn) - In the afternoon of October 3 in Hanoi, Deputy Minister of Natural Resources and Environment Tran Hong Ha received Ms. Victoria Kwakwa, Country Director of World Bank (WB) in Vietnam to deal with the World Bank's broader program of Support Programme to Respond to Climate Change in Vietnam (SP-RCC) after the year 2015.

WB is one of the six international donors for SP-RCC program from 2009 up to present. Appreciating the valuable collaboration of WB, Deputy Minister Tran Hong Ha desired World Bank to be an important partner in response to climate change.

Speaking at the working meeting, Deputy Minister Tran Hong Ha stressed that the SP-RCC program after 2015 would focus on three main contents: building policies to cope with change climate; activities responding to climate change; enhancing capacity to respond to climate change at all levels.

"The difference of SP-RCC program in the third period (from 2015 to 2020) compared with the two previous periods is the participation, implementation of projects, concrete and practical actions to implement policies that the two periods have built up, "Deputy said.

According to Ha, there are 6 international donors involving in the SP-RCC program. After 2015, the program needs to expand, particularly non-governmental organizations and businesses.

Responding to the recommendations of the Deputy Minister Tran Hong Ha, Victoria Kwakwa said that building interdisciplinary, interregional policies and projects are the right approaches in respond to climate change. She proposed that activities of SP -RCC in the coming period should be associated with WB-funded projects supporting the Mekong Delta.

Moreover, the World Bank is expected to provide a stronger comprehensive support package with a clear orientation after 2015.  Regarding to SP-RCC program, after 2015, the World Bank will continue to assist Vietnam through policies and technical support. To receive this funding, Vietnam needs to maintain and promote the connection between green growth and responds to climate change. In addition, the Government should commit that the World Bank’s assistance will disburse on target of against climate change.

Appreciating these comments of Ms.Victoria Kwakwa, Deputy Minister Tran Hong Ha said that in the meeting of the National Committee on Climate Change, donors and development partners and the Government of Vietnam will realize a new direction and a new way for SP-RCC program from 2015 to 2020.
