Stopping tourism activity of extracting bear gall in Ha Long

(11:14:19 AM 28/10/2014)
(Tinmoitruong.vn) - Visiting Ha Long Bay, foreign tourists (mainly from Korea) often visit six large-scaled bear farms located along the highway since 2007. Tourists can witness the extracting bear gall and buy them as a gift to bring home. However, these activities has violated Vietnam regulations and the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITEs).

To solve the problem, Ministry of Culture, Sport and Tourism and Quang Ninh People’s Committee have issued many regulations to ban tourism activity of vising bear farms in Ha Long. Thanks to these efforts, four out of total six bear farms committed to stop their illegal business.

To stop completely the illegal activity, in March 2014, Quang Ninh People’s Committee established an inter-sectorial taskforce to supervise and stop bear gall extracting activity in the two other bear farms. It is reported that no tourists have visited the two bear farms since May 2014.
